British Values at Abbeys

At Abbeys Primary School we consider that we have always taught British Values. Our school vision for all children to Aim, Aspire and Achieve reflects this.

Our vision will be achieved through outstanding teaching and learning within our school. This culture will be developed through a personalised approach which meets each child’s individual needs. We aim to develop the capacity of all pupils to become independent and reflective learners.

Our broad, balanced and creative curriculum will promote the enjoyment of lifelong learning, develop the whole child and create a sense of well- being within a safe, dynamic and sustainable environment. This will enable our pupils to be successful, responsible and respectful citizens of the future.

At the heart of our school are a set of core values. These underpin our whole curriculum and school life and aim to ensure our pupils leave Abbeys as happy, secure, caring and responsible citizens.

At Abbeys we have a rich and diverse culture and put particular emphasis on the values above.

These values permeate our culture. The school promotes one value each month through whole school and class assemblies.

We also feel a positive work ethic is important and expect our pupils to always try their hardest and do their best. We also expect them to work and learn collaboratively.

Our curriculum also supports these British Values:

Respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process

  • Elections for school council members
  • Fair trade lessons
  • End of year prom committee
  • Discussions and opinions shared across all learning
  • Choosing activities for Golden Time, playtimes and after school activities
  • Debates in English lessons.

Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England

  • Ensure school rules and expectations are clear and fair
  • Help pupils to distinguish right from wrong
  • Help pupils to respect the law and the basis on which it is made
  • Help pupils to understand that living under the rule of law protects individuals
  • Include visits from the police in the curriculum

Support for Equality of Opportunity for all

  • Support pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour, as well as knowing their rights
  • Model freedom of speech through pupil participation, while ensuring protection of vulnerable pupils and promoting critical analysis of evidence
  • Challenge stereotypes
  • Implement a strong anti-bullying culture

At Abbeys, we are committed to the development of community cohesion and the prevention of extremism and radicalisation both within our school’s physical boundaries and within our local, national and global environments. We are also committed to respond to community concerns or local disturbances in a positive way which supports British democratic society.
